Hieroglyphs was composed for the band by
Michael Siler with arrangement and score by Barb Siler (Gettysburg
and Canticle of Praise).
Hieroglyphs
is an Egyptian inspired symphonic suite. In the tradition of Bellbrook's previous
shows, this composition is divided into three parts: Opening, Ballad,
and the Closer.
The opening movement conjures up the spirits of the ancient Egyptian Gods and Pharaohs and
evokes images of the beginnings of the Egyptian civilization.
The love ballad incorporates Egyptian folk instrument sounds with a flute solo
introduction. The love ballad themes are played by a soprano saxophone duet suggesting the
love between a male and female slave. The conclusion of the love ballad is interrupted by
the coarse introduction of a slave work song, marking the beginning of the
Closing section.
The work song suggests the super human efforts of the slave labor watched carefully by
pharaohs and nobility in the production of the great pyramids, the sphinx and other
monumental architectural achievements of ancient Egyptian civilization. The Closing
movements in the final segment suggest the liberation of the slaves and an up-tempo
driving celebration of one of the most powerful of all times in world history.
