Original Composition by Andrew Markworth and Michael Siler

A maze is a puzzle in the form of a complex branching passage through which the solver must find a route. In everyday speech, the word ‘maze’ denotes a complex and confusing series of pathways.
Have you ever tried to work out a maze puzzle? Have you ever seen a corn maze? Or a hedge maze? How about a mouse sniffing his way through a maze looking for the cheese? Can you imagine what it would feel like to be that mouse – bumping up against the same partition over and over, taking the wrong turn a hundred times, being able to smell the prize at the end, but living the frustration over and over again of being so close but so far from the reward? What about the panic you must feel if you’re in one of those big hedge mazes and everything looks the same no matter which way you turn. Right, left, front, back – there are no clues to getting to the end! Will you ever even find your way out?
These are some of the emotions we will explore with our 2011 fall marching production of “Cornered.” The music and the visual will be closely matched in this show – as the band or guard is continually bumping up against barriers, the music will be a little repetitive – indicating an inability to move past something or around someone. Hopefully, it will also portray the frustration a mouse or a person must feel when completely stuck in a corner. An original composition that will be a collaboration between Andrew Markworth and Michael Siler, “Cornered” will also feature clips of that old familiar tune “Amazing Grace” – but only the part about “I once was lost but now am found” – a familiar line of music to all our audience members that further emphasizes the conundrum of being lost in a maze while giving them a little something to aurally latch on to. Visually, we will be able to use props and/or tarps and/or our own marching members to create barriers, or to indicate the twists and turns of a maze. Flags will be very maze like, as will anything else we use visually to represent the topic. The drill will be designed by Richard Hinshaw, who is the drill designer for Avon High School, the 3 time Grand National BOA Champion, and who wrote the drill for the winter guard show this past season. Sheldon Apo will choreograph the color guard, with percussion also by Andrew Markworth. We’re putting together an amazing staff that will also help us find our way through the maze that will be the 2011 Marching Band season, as we perform the show “Cornered.” The band is under the direction of Chris Foster, with assistance from Barb Siler. The Drum Majors are Jaclynn Bennett, Thomas Varner, and Wyatt Heinz.
